What moves cleanly

  • Products, with prices, images and descriptions, as long as each product uses three options or fewer (for example size, color and material).
  • Customers: names, emails and addresses. WooCommerce's customer export needs editing before Shopify will accept it.
  • Past orders, imported as records of orders that were already fulfilled, usually with a migration app.
  • Pages and blog posts, which we move and then restyle in the new theme.

What needs rework

  • Products with more than three options. Shopify's help center says products with more than three options won't have their options imported. We split them or restructure the options before the move.
  • Plugins. List every WooCommerce plugin you use: subscriptions, bundles, product add-ons, wholesale pricing, bookings. For each, the answer is a built-in Shopify feature, a Shopify app (often with a monthly price), custom work, or "you don't need it anymore". This list is where most migration budgets change.
  • Reviews. Shopify says you can't export or migrate reviews from WooCommerce directly; a reviews app with an import tool is the usual route.

What cannot move

  • Customer passwords. They are encrypted by your old platform. With Shopify's current customer accounts, customers sign in with a one-time code sent to their email, so they don't need a new password.
  • Saved payment cards stored by your old payment setup.

WooCommerce product URLs usually look like /product/blue-mug/; on Shopify they become /products/blue-mug. Every old URL that has traffic or links needs a permanent redirect to its new address. Shopify stores can hold up to 100,000 redirects (more on Plus), and they can be imported by CSV. One detail matters: a Shopify redirect only works when the old path doesn't exist on the new store, so we test every redirect after import.

A sensible order of work

Products first, then customers, then past orders, so orders link to the right products and customers. Then pages, redirects, and a full test with test orders before the domain moves.
