What carries over

  • Products, if every product has complete variant options. Shopify's help center notes that a product missing a variant option won't import successfully, so we check the export first.
  • Customers, after editing the Squarespace customer export into Shopify's format.
  • Past orders, through a migration app from the Shopify App Store.
  • Blog posts and page text, moved and then rebuilt in the new theme.

What gets rebuilt

  • Page layouts. Squarespace sections don't translate into a Shopify theme. We rebuild the pages you actually use; this is often the moment to drop pages nobody visits.
  • Reviews. Shopify says Squarespace reviews can't be exported or migrated directly; a reviews app with an import tool is the usual route.
  • Digital products need their shipping switched off in Shopify, and have extra rules if you sell to customers in Europe.

What does not carry over

  • Customer passwords. With Shopify's current customer accounts, customers sign in with a one-time code sent to their email instead.
  • Squarespace extensions and scheduling tools, which need a Shopify equivalent or a decision to drop them.

Your domain and email

If your domain is registered through Squarespace, the domain move and the store move are two separate jobs. We point the domain at Shopify (or transfer the registration, if you prefer) while keeping your email records in place, and we do it on the launch day we agree, not before.

Redirects

Squarespace store and blog URLs follow different patterns from Shopify's /products/, /collections/ and /blogs/ paths. We export every old URL with traffic or links, map it, and import the redirects before the domain switches. Shopify allows up to 100,000 redirects on standard plans, and a redirect only fires when the old path doesn't exist on the new store, so every redirect gets tested.

Checklist before launch day

  1. Products, variants and images verified against the old store.
  2. Customer list imported and a test sign-in done.
  3. Test orders placed in test mode, including tax and shipping.
  4. Redirects imported and spot-checked.
  5. Domain and email records reviewed together.
  6. New sitemap ready to submit.
