The two costs that change with the plan
Every Shopify plan has two costs that depend on which plan you pick: the monthly subscription and the percentage taken on each card sale through Shopify Payments. A third cost, the fixed 30¢ per online card transaction, is the same on all three plans.
| Plan | Subscription (monthly billing) | Subscription (yearly billing, per month) | Online card rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39 | $29 | 2.9% + 30¢ |
| Grow | $105 | $79 | 2.7% + 30¢ |
| Advanced | $399 | $299 | 2.5% + 30¢ |

What each plan costs at five sales levels
Monthly billing, online card sales only, with an average order of $60 (so the per-order 30¢ fee is counted).
| Monthly online sales | Orders (at $60 average, rounded up) | Basic | Grow | Advanced |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10,000 | 167 | $379 | $425 | $699 |
| $25,000 | 417 | $889 | $905 | $1,149 |
| $50,000 | 834 | $1,739 | $1,705 | $1,899 |
| $100,000 | 1,667 | $3,439 | $3,305 | $3,399 |
| $200,000 | 3,334 | $6,839 | $6,505 | $6,399 |
Each figure is subscription + (sales × card percentage) + (orders × $0.30). It leaves out apps, themes, taxes, shipping labels, currency conversion and in-person sales.
Where the crossovers are
The subscription goes up with each plan and the card percentage comes down by 0.2 points. So the higher plan pays for itself once your sales make up the difference:
- Basic to Grow: ($105 − $39) ÷ 0.2% = $33,000 a month in online card sales (monthly billing); $25,000 on yearly billing.
- Grow to Advanced: ($399 − $105) ÷ 0.2% = $147,000 a month (monthly billing); $110,000 on yearly billing.
Below a crossover, the cheaper plan wins on fees alone.
What the fee math leaves out
Fees are only half the decision. Plans also differ in staff accounts, reports and other features, and those can matter more than a few dollars a month. If you sell in person, the in-person card rates differ by plan too (2.6%, 2.5% and 2.4% plus 10¢ on Basic, Grow and Advanced), and POS Pro is a separate charge per location. And if you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own transaction fee (2%, 1% or 0.6% by plan) on top of what that provider charges.
How we use this with clients
Before a store we build is transferred to you, we run these numbers with your real sales, average order size and staff needs, so you choose a plan with the figures in front of you. Shopify may pay us a referral share when you choose a paid plan. It is a percentage of your subscription, so it is larger on higher plans; that is exactly why we put these numbers in front of you and let you choose. It does not change what you pay Shopify.
